On Saturday May 5th all across the United States an event of epic proportions will occur in the nation’s comic book shops as they celebrate the 11th annual Free Comic Book Day (FCBD) event. FCBD is an industry-wide celebration of comics that started in 2002 and is promoted by Diamond Distributing (the major U.S. distributor of comics) to promote this uniquely American form of art and entertainment that has spread out from the United States to the world. Yes, you read that correctly, on the same weekend that the new Marvel Comics movie, The Avengers, hits theaters, comic shops across the U.S. will be celebrating the 11th annual Free Comic Book Day.Comicbooks are considered to be one of the few truly American original art forms. Created in the early days of the 20th Century, and growing out of the syndicate comic newspaper strips of the time. Today’s comics feature a wide range of diverse storylines ranging from superheroes to sci-fi, to funny animals to slice-of life stories; all of which work to capture the imagination of its readers. The comicbook industry which began in the late 1930s has survived the dominance of radio, the ubiquity of TV, the spread of color and sound pictures, the rise of videogames, and even the availability of the Internet. Always adapting always changing to fit the times,
